Monday feeling a bit meh? Not any more, because Apollo Arms have launched their Curry Club which is going to zhuzh up the start of any week.
Since the opening of Apollo Arms earlier this year in Clapham Old Town, we’ve heard murmurings across the neighbourhood of just how good the food at this spot is. It’s taking the title ‘gusto pub’ seriously and has already been visited by many a foodie to great acclaim. Especially known for the hearty roasts, and Sundays see the place packed with punters tucking into properly gourmet food- beef, pork or chicken with all the trimmings (and maybe a Bloody Mary too).
But what about Mondays? Pubs are easy to forget about after a hedonistic weekend of revelry, but Apollo Arms is changing that with their Curry Club Mondays where you can get a curry plus a side for just £20 (or £25 if you add an alcoholic drink). This deal feels far too good to be true for- the infamously pricey- Clapham Old Town, so we headed down to see for ourselves whether it was up to scratch. Spoiler: it was better than we could have dreamt.
We were shown to our candlelit table through the beautiful pub where we were quickly served the famous homemade focaccia. It came with olive oil and balsamic and was warm, delicate and gone in a flash. Good, fresh bread really does make all the difference and it set the high standard for the meal. And we mean it when we say this is famous, take a little scroll through their tagged photos on instagram and you’ll get what we mean.
Then onto the main reason why we were here: the curry. It’s a weekly changing menu (an excuse to become regulars!) where there will be three curry options; a meat, fish and vegetable. When we ate we couldn’t help but try out all three curries on the menu and we are still trying to work out which our favourite could be. The spinach and paneer Kashmir curry was so thick and creamy and incredibly rich in colour from the spinach, the slow cooked pork and green bean bhuna was fiery and flavourful and the jungle fish curry was generous with unbelievably crisp, perfectly cooked fish and slightly fragrant with baby fennel. All were fantastic, fresh and healthy and made even more delicious when scooped up with the garlic flat bread that comes with each curry (as does a lovely portion of steamed jasmine rice).
If that wasn’t enough, we had to choose between the sides. Thankfully the staff at Apollo Arms know what they are doing so if, like us, you’re unsure of how to narrow down your order, have a chat with them. Their recommendations were the crunchy Bombay potatoes which were completely moreish and should be part of any curry feast but it was the satay charred tender stem was a surprising favourite for us. Smokey, creamy and a perfect balance to the spice of the curry with the peanutty flavours.
We love that the Apollo Arms are dipping way from their usual pub grub for one night a week, and adding another delightful deal to their already impressive offering. There’s also a weekly lunchtime deal, a Saturday brunch and, of course, the roasts on Sundays. So yes, the neighbourhood rumours were true. We can proudly confirm the food here is divine and remember- pubs aren’t just for the weekends.
