The Northcote could be getting a rooftop transformation

Big news for Battersea locals: The Northcote, a much-loved Victorian pub on Northcote Road, could be getting a serious upgrade.

Plans have been submitted to Wandsworth Council for a rooftop extension that would see the addition of a brand-new drinking and dining space. If given the green light, it’s set to be a game-changer for this iconic spot.

What’s in the Plans?

The proposal from Young’s, the pub’s owners, includes an enclosed rooftop terrace with a retractable roof, so you can enjoy the space whatever the weather. The new terrace would include seating for 103 people, complete with a bar, dining area, and greenery to keep things looking fresh.

Inside, the pub is also set for some major upgrades. The plans suggest:

  • Moving the main entrance to the corner of the building.
  • Adding new customer toilets on the second floor.
  • Extending the staircase to access the rooftop.
  • A full refurbishment of the pub’s interiors.
  • An upgraded kitchen to handle the extra covers.

Why Now?

The Northcote has been struggling to compete with nearby venues that offer larger outdoor spaces, particularly during the summer months. With only a small pavement seating area added in 2018, the pub has lost out on vital trade during sunnier weather.

The submitted plans highlight that the building hasn’t seen much investment in years, and its condition is starting to reflect that. The hope is that the new terrace and refurbishment will not only modernise the space but also secure the pub’s future as a thriving part of the Northcote Road community.

A Historic Spot

The Northcote has been a part of Battersea’s landscape for well over a century, believed to have been built between 1871 and 1881. While the plans promise a sleek new space, they also aim to preserve the character of this historic building.

What’s Next?

Wandsworth Council will now review the proposal, and the pub’s future will rest on their decision. If approved, the rooftop terrace could be just what The Northcote needs to cement its status as one of Battersea’s best-loved spots.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed for this one—because who wouldn’t want to enjoy a pint on a leafy rooftop terrace?
