Brixton Wholefoods, a staple of the community for 45 years, has been saved from closure.
Anita Thorpe, the powerhouse behind the much-loved gift shop Diverse, has stepped in to take over following the retirement of the shop’s founder, Hilary Waterfield.
The risk of losing Brixton Wholefoods had many locals worried, but Anita’s intervention has ensured its survival. “There’s a lot to do to turn things around,” Anita admits. “But with the community’s support, I’m confident we can make this place thrive again. Come in and check out the incredible selection of natural foods, remedies, herbs, and roots on offer.”
Brixton Wholefoods has been more than just a shop for decades—it’s been a symbol of the area’s values of quality and sustainability. Anita’s takeover brings fresh energy to this iconic store, and her success with Diverse is proof she knows how to make a business work while staying true to the essence of Brixton.
“Diverse was never meant to be a big deal,” Anita recalls. “It started as a hobby—a way to sell things that reflected Brixton’s multicultural energy. Over time, it grew into a platform for artists and makers of colour, which feels like the perfect fit for this community.”
With Anita now leading the way, there’s optimism that Brixton Wholefoods can reclaim its place as a cornerstone of the community. If you’ve never been or it’s been a while, now’s the perfect time to drop by and rediscover what makes this shop so special.
