Falcon Road Bridge is getting a colourful new makeover

Thanks to the winning design proposal, Beyond the Bridge, the space is going to be brighter, greener, and way more community-focused. And the best bit? It’ll be ready just in time for Wandsworth’s London Borough of Culture 2025 celebrations.

A bridge designed for the people

This isn’t just about making the bridge look pretty (although it’ll definitely do that too). The project has been led by GPAD and a dream team of architects, designers, and local organisations. They’ve worked closely with residents to make sure the design reflects what the community really wants. Think workshops, walking tours, and a whole lot of conversations—this makeover is all about collaboration.

Here’s what’s coming:

• Dynamic lighting: Say goodbye to dim and dingy. The bridge will be lit up with artistic, responsive lighting that celebrates local culture and events.
• Green vibes: With pollinator-friendly plants and micro-gardens, this will be a breath of fresh air (literally).
• Local pride: A ‘Memories of Wandsworth’ mural wall will showcase stories and landmarks from the area, co-designed with the community.
• Less noise, more comfort: Acoustic panels will make it a calmer, quieter space—great news for everyone, especially neurodivergent individuals.

Why it matters

Clapham Junction is one of South London’s busiest hubs, and this bridge has long been overdue for a glow-up. Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council, summed it up perfectly: “This new bridge design will provide a better and brighter route and create a new landmark for the borough during our year as London Borough of Culture 2025.”
