Brixton’s favourite spot for families, Papa’s Park, is facing a serious challenge.
The park’s community buildings are in desperate need of repairs, and without immediate support, they could be lost forever. Having been a safe space for over three decades, this volunteer-led gem now needs a helping hand to rebuild its hall and café.
The Pulross Area Play Association (PAPA) stepped in during the 1990s to save the park from being swallowed up by developers. Since then, it has become a thriving spot where families and friends come together. But with leaks and years of wear and tear taking their toll, action is needed to keep this beloved space open.
This isn’t just a playground; it’s a lifeline for Brixton’s families. In an area where outdoor space is scarce, Papa’s Park offers over 6,000 visitors a year a much-needed escape. With a sports pitch, café, and lush green areas, it provides a safe, fun, and educational environment for children to thrive.
James Atherton, Co-Chair of the Papa’s Park Committee, underscores how crucial the park is:
“Papa’s Park has been a safe haven for children and their families for more than three decades. Without generous donations from local people and businesses, we are facing the reality that we will not be able to protect this very special community asset for future generations.”
With planning permission already secured, things are moving in the right direction. The new design, crafted by architectural practice AOMD, will introduce a timber-framed building, a welcoming street-side café, and a biodiversity-focused garden. Sustainability is at the heart of the project, with plans to reuse concrete slabs, incorporate eco-friendly hemp insulation, and replace tarmac with permeable paving.
The revamped hall will not only host commercial events but also offer affordable community spaces for local nurseries, schools, and groups. Plus, sourcing materials locally will reduce environmental impact and boost Brixton businesses.
Papa’s Park needs the community to rally behind it. Whether you’re a local business or a resident, every donation counts in ensuring this cherished space can continue to serve Brixton.
