Now, they’ve launched a newly revamped tour of Clapham South’s deep-level shelter. It’s the perfect opportunity to explore a lesser-known part of London’s history.

Built during the Second World War, Clapham South’s deep-level shelter was designed to protect over 8,000 Londoners from air raids. This underground maze, buried 11 stories below, is a marvel of wartime engineering. Today, thanks to the museum’s meticulous efforts, you can experience it just as it was—complete with reconstructed spaces and authentic artefacts.

The tour is led by two guides. One guide takes on the role of a 1940s warden, bringing the shelter’s history to life. It’s one thing to hear about the past, but it’s another to step into it. This tour lets you do just that. You’ll see the warden’s booth and the canteen, both recreated from archival photos. You’ll also get to handle genuine wartime items, adding a hands-on element to the experience.

Clapham South’s history doesn’t end with the war. After 1945, it became a temporary home for Caribbean migrants who arrived on the Empire Windrush in 1948. Later, it housed visitors to the Festival of Britain in 1951. The tour weaves these stories together, giving you a rich understanding of the shelter’s role in London’s history.

Chris Nix, Director of Content at London Transport Museum, shared his thoughts: “Presenting such unique history in an authentic setting is incredibly powerful. We’ve spent a decade researching to ensure we honour those who lived and worked here. We’re excited to share Clapham South’s story with the public in a new, engaging way.”

For those interested in exploring more of London’s hidden history, the museum also offers British Sign Language (BSL) tours. These tours are available at other iconic locations, including Aldwych and Baker Street. They ensure that everyone can uncover the secrets of London’s underground past.

The museum has also updated the Down Street: Churchill’s Secret Station tour, adding fresh content. But be quick—this tour will be retired in September 2024, making it your last chance to explore it.

Tickets for all Hidden London tours are now available through the London Transport Museum’s website. By joining a tour, you’ll not only discover fascinating history but also support the museum’s work in preserving London’s transport heritage.

So why not take the plunge? Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a local looking for a new perspective, or simply curious, the Clapham South tour is a must. Step into the past and uncover the stories hidden beneath your feet.
