Steak, chicken, ribs… The Butcher Grill is doing what its name suggests, and it’s doing it well. This is one for the meat-eaters!
London has made big moves in the vegetarian and vegan space over the past few years. Keeping up with the ever expanding numbers of people adopting a plant based diet, it has been opening more and more veg-forward restaurants. In 2022 we were even named the most vegan friendly city in the world with our 400 vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants in the capital. And good for London! Vegetarian or not, we know that eating less meat is better for our health and the environment. So, when we do eat meat, it should be done with care and thought. Which is why we were excited to visit The Butcher Grill, meat specialists, at their month-old outpost in Tooting Market.
They’ve been residents of Mercato Metropolitano in Elephant and Castle for 6 years and have arrived in Tooting Market to bring their meaty menu to the people of SW17. Steaks, sandwhiches, mixed grills, salads, chicken, loaded fries… This is a menu that really delivers what The Butcher Grill says on the tin. Their farm to plate ethos is evident in every juicy forkful: it’s all fresh on the day, grilled right there in front of you as well as being 100% halal. It’s the properly good quality we are looking for when we are in the market for some meat.
We tucked into three dishes. First up was the grilled chicken breast salad. Charred chicken atop a really fresh base of lettuce, cucumber and tomato and then coated in a really zingy chimichurri sauce, this was a proper summery lunch. Simple enough to let us really taste the flavour of the chicken and left us feel a little virtuous too, this is a great option if you don’t want something overly complex and still delicious. Next was the Argentinian steak sandwich which came with lettuce, cucumber, tomato, a creamy rosemary and garlic mayo and more of that chimichurri. We loved this one- more filling than the salad and really hit the spot with the different textures and flavours going on. The steak itself was just perfection; cooked skilfully and with a hint of smokiness, this was a seriously elevated sandwich.
What surprised us, though, was the steak and cheese loaded fries. Our star dish of the day, we’d recommend this as a must order for anyone. The steak was truly melt-in-the-mouth and went so well with a bit of cheese and a hot, crispy chip. And with touch of the chimichurri too? A flavour explosion that we couldn’t get enough of.
The Butcher Grill is a fantastic addition to Tooting Market- they’re doing it properly and if you want to treat yourself to a really good, relaxed, meaty lunch or dinner then you’ll be hard pushed to find anywhere as good as this. We will be back to try out their lunch meal boxes, but in the meantime will be dreaming of that chimichurri sauce. Get down there to see what we mean for yourself!
