‘Is That a Boy’s Toy?’ – LGBTQ+ History Month Exhibition in Brixton

A powerful and thought-provoking exhibition is coming to Brixton Tate Library this February as part of LGBTQ+ History Month.

Running from 4th-27th February 2025, ‘Is That a Boy’s Toy?’ is a group exhibition curated by Lambeth-based queer artist Xavier White, exploring the intersection of gender, identity, and childhood play.

Challenging Gender Norms Through Art

Featuring a diverse lineup of artists from Lambeth and beyond, this exhibition delves into how toys have historically shaped and reinforced gender roles. Using mediums ranging from painting and sculpture to photography and installations, the show presents deeply personal reflections and broader cultural narratives.

Through these works, the exhibition questions the rigid constructs of masculinity and femininity, inviting visitors to rethink the messages ingrained in play from an early age.

A Line-Up of Impactful Artists

Visitors can expect to see work from an exciting array of artists, including: ANDI, Andy Matheson, Angelina Myers, Artie Firth, Athrú, Ben Chisnall, Chris Hughes-Copping, Christopher Lieberman, Daniel Bland, Eva Sbaraini, Fiona Freund, George Chousos, IJ Duncan, James Robert Morrison, Jose Gomez, Judeam, Luke Anthony Rooney, Marceline Birkholz, Marcia White, Marty Davis, Matt David, Natalie Sommer, Nigel Grimmer, Raul Moya-Mula, Trans History Week, and Xavier White.

Special Events & Discussions

In addition to the exhibition, there will be a private view, panel discussion, and drinks reception on Tuesday, 11th February, from 5 pm to 8 pm. This event will provide an opportunity to hear from the artists, engage in meaningful discussions, and gain deeper insights into the themes explored in the exhibition.

About the Curator

Xavier White (b. 1993) is a Lambeth-based artist whose work sits at the intersection of activism and socio-political commentary. Through the use of childhood toys, he playfully challenges concepts of queer identity, toxic masculinity, and the male gaze—transforming nostalgia into a lens for deeper reflection.

With its vibrant mix of artistic expression and social commentary, ‘Is That a Boy’s Toy?’ is set to be one of the most compelling exhibitions of LGBTQ+ History Month. Whether you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community or simply interested in exploring these themes, this show is not one to miss.
