And now, the rest of the country is taking notice—Lambeth Libraries have been shortlisted for Library of the Year at the British Book Awards 2025.

Dubbed “the BAFTAs of the book trade,” the awards celebrate the power of books and the people who bring them to communities. This year’s Library of the Year category recognises places that go beyond lending books—those that act as hubs for learning, creativity, and connection.

What makes Lambeth Libraries stand out?

Lambeth Libraries have always been more than just a place to borrow books. Whether you’re studying, attending an event, using a computer, looking at art, or simply in need of a quiet escape, these spaces are open to everyone. And that’s down to the hard work and dedication of the team, led by Susannah, Caroline, and their brilliant staff, who ensure that libraries remain welcoming, inclusive, and inspiring.

The nomination highlights how Lambeth Libraries collaborate with local publishers, businesses, and partners to make reading a central part of community life. As judge Karen Napier MBE, CEO of The Reading Agency, put it:
“These finalists represent the very best of what modern libraries can achieve, proving that libraries remain essential, dynamic spaces of learning, creativity, and community engagement, with reading at their heart.”

Who are they up against?

Lambeth Libraries are one of 36 libraries and library authorities competing across nine regions. In the London category, they’re up against Newham’s library service and five individual libraries. The regional winners will be announced in March, and those who make it through will compete for the overall Library of the Year title at the British Book Awards ceremony on Monday, 12th May 2025.

A well-deserved nomination

Whether they win or not, this recognition is a huge testament to the impact Lambeth Libraries have on the community. Their role in fostering learning, creativity, and support for residents of all ages is unmatched, and this nomination only confirms what Brixton locals already know—Lambeth Libraries are the heart of the community.
