Clapham’s Lew Mathias is running the London Marathon to raise awareness for rare muscle condition

Running a marathon is no small feat, but for 29-year-old Clapham local Lew Mathias, it’s about more than just crossing the finish line.

Diagnosed with Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 in 2018, a rare muscle-wasting condition, he’s taking on the London Marathon to prove that his condition won’t hold him back—and to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK.

Taking on 26.2 miles with a purpose

Lew first noticed something wasn’t quite right when he struggled with stiffness in his hands while playing Ultimate Frisbee at university. A trip to the GP led to a life-changing diagnosis—one that would later be confirmed in his father and two brothers, too.

For years, Lew kept it quiet, not wanting to be treated differently. But now, he’s using his journey to make a statement: muscle-wasting conditions deserve more awareness, more research, and more support.

From 10k to marathon mode

Until last year, Lew had never run more than 10km. Now? He’s training for one of the biggest races in the world. “I’ve noticed more symptoms in recent years—like weakness in my fingertips and excessive fatigue—but aside from that, I’m fitter than ever,” he says.

After joining a local running club, he found a love for the sport, and what started as a challenge quickly turned into something bigger. The London Marathon isn’t just about proving something to himself—it’s a way to raise money for the 110,000 people in the UK living with muscle-wasting conditions.

Why this run matters

Lew has set a goal of raising £2,000 for Muscular Dystrophy UK, a charity that has been a lifeline for him and his family. “They’ve been incredible—not just for me, but for my whole family,” he explains. “I want to give back, help others get the support I’ve had, and fund research into future treatments.”

How to support Lew

Lew’s taking on 26.2 miles with determination, resilience, and a whole lot of heart—and he’s asking for support along the way. If you want to back his mission, you can donate to his fundraising campaign here:

Lew’s story is one of strength, perseverance, and proving that a diagnosis doesn’t have to define you. On race day, he won’t just be running for himself—he’ll be running for everyone facing a muscle-wasting condition.
