Get ready for an enchanting journey to the heart of Cambodian cuisine, right here in Clapham.
The King & Co, known for its knack for hosting some of the most tantalising pop-up kitchens in town, has done it again. This time, it’s Mamapen that’s taking over the culinary stage, and boy, are we in for a treat. Managed by the charismatic Kaneda Pen, Mamapen is a love letter to the rich flavours and vibrant street food culture of Cambodia. Inspired by backyard barbecues, bustling street food scenes, and the warmth of family gatherings, this pop-up kitchen is all set to introduce Londoners to a side of Cambodian cuisine that’s as authentic as it is innovative.
“We’re Cambodian concept inspired by street food, backyard barbecues, and family gatherings,” Kaneda beams as he walks us through the menu. And what a menu it is! From pork toasts that give the traditional prawn toast a run for its money, topped with a perfectly runny fried egg and a dollop of fiery Drunken Master XO sauce, to the Khmer fried chicken bun that packs a flavourful punch with its sweet chilli mayo and sharp pickles in a toasty bun.
But the stars of the show are undoubtedly the sour pineapple curry and the half barbecue chicken. The curry, a delectable mix of sour, savoury, and sweet, is a testament to the complexity and depth of Cambodian flavours. Meanwhile, the barbecue chicken, with its sweet and robust Southeast Asian flavours, promises to be a crowd-pleaser.
Available only until the 13th of April, Mamapen at The King & Co is a fleeting chance to dive headfirst into the exquisite world of Cambodian cuisine. “It’s a perfect introduction to Cambodian cuisine,” says Kaneda, his pride evident. Inspired by his mom’s cooking, this pop-up is not just a culinary venture; it’s a heartfelt tribute to the flavours and memories of home.
So, if you’re in the mood to spice up your dining routine with something truly special, Mamapen at The King & Co awaits. Whether you’re a connoisseur of Cambodian cuisine or a curious foodie looking to explore new culinary landscapes, this pop-up kitchen is set to deliver an unforgettable experience.
