Brixton is feeling the loss today as Market House, the two-storey pub on Coldharbour Lane, has closed its doors unexpectedly.
Over the weekend, notices appeared in the venue’s windows, revealing that the landlord had seised the property.
Executive Recoveries and Enforcement posted signs with the stark message:
“These premises have today been seized on the authority of the landlord. Notice is hereby served, and forfeiture of lease effected.”
Market House stood as a key part of Brixton’s nightlife for years. Its closure signals the end of an era. The venue recently housed Original Flava, the popular restaurant by brothers Craig and Shaun McAnuff, who introduced traditional Jamaican dishes to its kitchen. This residency was a significant milestone for the brothers, marking their first permanent space after years of successful pop-ups.
In March of this year, the pub reopened following a two-year closure for extensive refurbishments. Its updated look and the buzz around Original Flava hinted at a promising new chapter. Unfortunately, that promise has been cut short.
This closure highlights a concerning trend in Brixton. Nightlife venues in the area have been shutting down at an alarming rate. Just last month, The Dogstar—a long-standing local favourite—closed for good, leaving a noticeable gap in Brixton’s cultural scene.
For now, Market House remains closed, leaving the neighbourhood quieter and less vibrant. The challenges facing London’s nightlife are evident, but there’s hope that this iconic space will see new beginnings in the future.
