The project, proposed by developer JACHO (Battersea) Ltd, will see a warehouse on Gwynne Road demolished to make way for the construction of these modern high-rise buildings.

Details of the Development

The approved plans feature two blocks: one towering at 20 storeys and the other at eight storeys. In total, the development will provide 88 flats, with industrial units occupying the lower floors. This project marks a significant transformation for the area, blending residential living with industrial functionality.

Out of the 88 flats, 28 will be designated as affordable homes, equating to 32 per cent of the overall scheme. This includes 18 homes set aside for social rent, a notable contribution to the local housing market. Initially, the developer proposed 90 homes, but the final number was adjusted to 88 following design modifications.

Community and Council Support

Wandsworth Council’s planning committee unanimously approved the plans on 18th July. Labour councillor Paul White expressed strong support for the development, particularly commending the inclusion of affordable housing. He remarked, “I am very much in favour of this scheme and the level of social housing it offers is commendable.”

Strategic Location and Benefits

A report accompanying the application highlighted the site’s excellent connectivity to public transport. It is just an eight-minute walk from Clapham Junction station, ensuring easy access for future residents. The report stated, “This development will bring vibrant, much-needed workspace and living accommodation to an area that’s in transition from a mixed employment past to a modern mixed-use urban quarter.”

Looking Ahead

The approval of this development signifies a significant step forward for Battersea, reflecting the area’s ongoing evolution. The new apartment blocks promise to enhance the local landscape, providing much-needed housing and modern industrial space. As Battersea continues to grow and transform, projects like this one will play a crucial role in shaping its future.
