Film buffs, mark your diaries for Sunday, 17th November because Clapham Common Film Club has a treat in store with their upcoming screening of Tabu, the critically acclaimed gem by Portuguese director Miguel Gomes.
If you’re into films that take you on a journey, mix romance with a dash of mystery, and give you something to think about on the way home, this is the one for you.
So, what’s Tabu all about? The film follows Pilar, a middle-aged Catholic woman in modern-day Lisbon, who finds herself drawn into the chaotic world of her elderly neighbour, Aurora. Aurora is a bit of a character – she gambles away her money at the casino and has a complex relationship with life itself. But there’s more to her story. Through flashbacks to 1970s Mozambique, Tabu reveals Aurora’s youth, her forbidden romance with a dashing adventurer, and all the nostalgia, colonial history, and intrigue that come with it. It’s dreamy, it’s mysterious, and it’s utterly captivating.
If you’ve been meaning to check out the club, now’s your chance. This screening is one of their last for the year, and the perfect way to get a feel for the thoughtful, curated cinema experiences they’re all about.
