Hayfever meds at the ready because the flower show is back and the South West is about to get blooming lovely.
The most iconic 5 days of the Chelsea calendar are back this May where, between the 22nd May and 27th May, Chelsea will be blooming. The Royal Horticultural Society are back with the 110th edition of the flower show. The show brings green fingered experts, garden architects, groundbreaking designers and scientists and flower fans from all corners of the globe. They’ll convene in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea for a week of festivities all sponsored by the Newt in Somerset- Somersets latest addition to its beautifully designed bolt-holes for locals and tourists.
The flower shows theme this year is all about spotlighting “… the ways that gardening and gardens can contribute positively to our health and wellbeing, as well as to help the environment“. There will be lots of inspiration for inclusive green spaces for socially deprived communities, ways to use gardens to connect with nature (especially for those in hospitals and hospices). Over 12 different garden displays curated by exceptionally talented designers will make for a beautiful way to gather ideas, and you’ll be able to shop for said brand new ideas at the plant nurseries too. It doesn’t just stop at the plants though. Beyond all things green, there are lots of other things to keep you entertained. Expect live music, delicious food options and bars too. It really is a proper day out.
…But it’s not just The Royal Hospital that will be getting floral. Coinciding with the dates of the flower show is Chelsea in Bloom, coming in hot with its own theme ‘Flowers on Film’. The festival is Londons largest free flower show and is made up of businesses and stores in Chelsea decorating their shop fronts and creating standalone displays within the theme. It’s a competition too- there’s a pro panel who will choose their favourite but you can also add your two cents with The People’s Champion Award, just vote via the website here. As ever, there are a lot of participants taking part spotting all of them makes for a really lovely day out in Chelsea. Check out the map here for a handy navigational tool when it launches!
