Roast season is upon us so we are featuring some of the very best Sunday lunches you can get your hands on in Tooting.
If you’re looking for a last minute Sunday plan, then The Kings Head is a sure bet. Everything about it is comfortingly simple. You won’t have to fight for a table, the menu is full of classics that you really want to eat and the atmosphere is welcoming and calm. If you’re feeling fragile and hungover, this is a perfect place to hunker down for hours on end.
Ambience: Inside is a lovely open space and though it was fairly quiet when we arrived it quickly got busier as the afternoon went on. There was a consistent gentle buzz about the place that makes you feel wrapped up and warm without being claustrophobic. We also appreciated that though the sports was on, the sound was off which meant that there was still a bit of excitement without it taking over the whole place. They’ve got a big pile of board games which you can help yourself to whilst you wait…It screams ‘wholesome Sunday’ vibes.
Food: The food reflects the space. It’s simple, sure, but in the best way. It’s all lovely and there’s no fuss about it. Just a big roast done well. As advertised on the menu, all the Sunday lunches come with ‘roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, seasoned greens, roasted carrots, cauliflower cheese and a rich gravy‘. It was a generous portion of bits and we went for the two meaty options: the beef Sirloin and the half chicken with stuffing. It was all delicious, just the right amount of potatoes, a good amount of meat and enough vegetables to get some of your 5-a-day in easily. They really hit the spot and we were left with clean plates.
The desserts were along a similar line; nothing too fancy but just what you want on a Sunday. A sticky toffee pudding and a triple chocolate brownie were both the stick-to-your-ribs kind of pud that made us slightly nostalgic for school lunches. Again, there was not a smudge left of either in our bowls.
Standouts: That gravy really, really got us going. Though the mains themselves were comfortingly unfussy and simple, the depth of flavour in the gravy really elevated the whole meal for us. It’s our favourite gravy we’ve had in Tooting: rich, thick and a lot of it too.
Price: Beef: £15.50. Chicken: £14.50. Puddings: £5.50 each.
This has got to be the best value for money we’ve come across so far. Even better is that all roasts include a healthy dollop of cauliflower cheese so you won’t need to factor that into costs for the mains… more to spend on pudding!
