This weekend, Lambeth is gearing up to honour the 76th anniversary of the arrival of the Windrush Generation, a pivotal moment in British history.
Named after the HMT Empire Windrush ship, which docked on 22 June 1948, these Caribbean migrants initially found temporary accommodation beneath Clapham South Tube station before many settled in Brixton, close to the nearest labour exchange.
As the first home of the Windrush Generation, Lambeth has been significantly enriched by their contributions and those of their descendants in public service, particularly the NHS, as well as in music, culture, and the wider economy. This year, the celebrations will revolve around the theme ‘Passing the Baton,’ emphasising intergenerational storytelling and legacy.
On Saturday, from 2pm to 5pm, Windrush Square in Brixton will come alive with events led by the Brixton Project and the Bureau of Silly Ideas. Expect an afternoon brimming with performances, family activities, and cultural experiences. Locals are invited to bring a picnic and immerse themselves in a day filled with community bonding and a unified message of hope.
Sunday will see The Friends of Windrush Square hosting their annual Big Caribbean Lunch from 12pm to 7pm. This gathering will bring together elders from the Windrush Generation and their descendants for a day of food, music, fun, and storytelling.
Bayo Dosunmu, Chief Executive of Lambeth Council, highlighted the importance of this occasion: “We were the first home of the Windrush Generation and have built a proud tradition of marking Windrush Day, particularly on the 75th anniversary when we had a huge celebration and commemoration. For this year’s 76th anniversary, we are continuing that tradition by engaging with our communities, coming together to share stories and taking the time to learn more about our shared histories.”
Additionally, the Black Cultural Archives, situated in Windrush Square, will host more events throughout June and into July. As the home of Black British History in the UK, it continues to shed light on the rich legacy of the Windrush Generation.
