Windrush day is recognised annually on 22nd June. A moment for celebrating cultural heritage, there are lots of events to get involved with.
The Windrush Caribbean Film Festival
When: 25th June
Where: Ritzy Picture House, SW2 1JG
The theme of this year’s Windrush Caribbean Film Festival is ‘From Empire to Commonwealth: Legacies of the Windrush Generation’. They are touring the country with in-person screenings of iconic films and on the 25th will be at the Ritzy showing Pressure, Horace Ové.
Legacy and Hope, Windrush Celebration Concert
When: 25th June
Where: Brixton Library, SW2 1JQ
To celebrate Windrush Day, Pegasus Opera Company are putting on a free concert at the Brixton Library. Singers from African and Asian heritage will be performing, as well as musical theatre and traditional pieces too. The Pegasus Community Choir will also be singing a commissioned Lambeth Windrush song.
Caribbean storytelling, arts and crafts
When: 22nd-25th June
Where: Pimlico Library, SW1V 3EY
Pimlico Library is hosting loads of events for the smaller people in your life. There will be fun, interactive and engaging workshops to spark interest and educate kids on the history of Windrush.
Windrush Playback Stories
When: 21st June
Where: Brixton Library, SW2 1JQ
This storytelling project is a sow with a difference. Audience members offer stories, memories or dreams of their experiences and the Windrush Playback Storytellers will improvise an interpretation then and there! Fun and full of stories from all.
We Should All Be Dreaming
When: 25th-26th June
Where: Black Cultural Archives, SW2 1EF
This interactive project invites you to a curated dinner party, where you will dream up new realities with the other participants. You’ll be guided by choreographer Sonya Lindfors and writer/activist Maryan Abdulkarim, who will lead you through the evening with the help of invited speakers and prompted discussions.
