TOOTING ROAST SERIES: The Trafalgar Arms

Roast season is upon us so we are featuring some of the very best Sunday lunches you can get your hands on in Tooting.

The Trafalgar Arms is the kind of pub everyone needs on their radar. The decor is just the right balance of cosy and fun (we love the tiled flooring and that green ‘Tooting’ sign) and the wooden bar with the packed drinks shelves behind it is a very welcome sight. The team are welcoming and as fun as the pub they work in- you’ll feel relaxed and comfortable straight away.

Ambience: This is the kind of roast to book in advance or risk not being able to get a table. They keep the sport and Sunday lunches separate which we really like, it means that if you’re in there for the sport you don’t need to worry too much about disturbing diners and vice-versa, if you’re in for a meal you won’t be caught up in the ruckus. They are fantastic for families, so bring the kids and settle in.

Food: We tried every single roast offering on the menu and, alright, we are going to just come out with it. This is our favourite of the roasts so far. It’s our favourite for a few reasons. First, all of the meats we tried were incredibly tender. They were that fall-apart perfection and we especially appreciated the impressive crackling that came with the pork. The trimmings were equally impressive- goose fat roast potatoes were that perfect golden colour and crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside and we adored the maple roasted carrots and parsnips which added a nice touch of sweetness to the plate. Finally a bit of brightness from the cabbage which rounded off the meal nicely. And of course, there was a lot of gravy on the side to add at free will. And we certainly did add at free will. Make sure you add a side or two, we went for the truffle-spiked cauliflower cheese but they’ve got some tempting numbers on there; giant pigs in blankets, mac and cheese, greens…

Standouts: That truffle cauliflower cheese. Oozy cheese, punchy truffle, well cooked cauliflower. Need we say more.

Price: Beef: £20. Pork: £19. Chicken: £18.50. Vegetarian wellington: £18. Cauliflower cheese: £6.

A good thing to note here is that, if you’re with another person who is up for it, you can get the ‘ultimate roast’ which is a combination of all three meats and comes all the trimmings, unlimited Yorkshire puddings and gravy (!) plus three sides of your choice. It is £60 between 2 but well worth it if you’re feeling hungry.

THE ROAST SERIES: We are on a journey to discover some of the very best Sunday roasts in Tooting. Each will have remarks in 4 categories: Ambience, The Food, Price and Standouts to make it clear what it is we loved about each one. We will aim to order similarly in every place we try to give you the clearest indication of how it compares to the rest of the neighbourhood. Stay tuned to find your favourite.
