This initiative will come into effect after the installation of 111 designated e-bike parking bays across the borough. E-bike operator Forest is thrilled about the collaboration, while Lime UK appreciates the new rules designed to keep pavements clear and e-bikes easy to use. The scheme addresses ongoing issues with rental e-bikes blocking pathways, which has been a source of frustration for many residents.

Work on the parking bays kicked off on Thursday, targeting key areas like Clapham Junction, Tooting Broadway, Tooting Bec, Wandsworth, Balham, and Putney town centres. The council aims to complete this project within four weeks.

Once the bays are ready, parking e-bikes on pavements in these busy areas will be strictly prohibited. However, “free-floating” parking will still be allowed in quieter parts of the borough, with additional bays expected by the end of the year.

David Tidley, head of transport strategy at Wandsworth Council, supports the use of e-bikes as a convenient travel option but acknowledges the problems caused by inconsiderate parking.

The council has mapped out “busy” areas around town centre bays. These zones will be displayed on operators’ apps and the council’s website once the scheme is live. Riders will receive in-app guidance to the nearest parking bay.

This move follows a previous clash between Wandsworth Council and Lime, where bikes were seized in November 2022 after causing significant obstructions in Wandsworth town centre.

Other London boroughs, such as Westminster and Hounslow, have reported similar issues. The National Federation of the Blind of the UK (NFBUK) has also highlighted the dangers improperly parked e-bikes pose to visually impaired individuals.

Alex Berwin, head of policy at Forest, expressed excitement about the partnership with Wandsworth Council. He believes the agreement will ensure safe and convenient parking while maintaining the availability of sustainable and affordable e-bike services.

Hal Stevenson, director of policy at Lime, echoed these sentiments, noting that the flexible parking system aligns with recommendations for dedicated parking in busy areas and non-obstructive options elsewhere.

With this new scheme, Wandsworth Council aims to create a safer, more organised environment for pedestrians and e-bike users alike, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the benefits of sustainable transport without compromising accessibility.
