Shrub and Shutter, inventive cocktails and fabulous food

We headed down to Shrub and Shutter, an experimental cocktail bar right in the heart of Brixton. Located on Coldharbour lane, we headed down to try out some of their famous drinks and food.

The cocktails really were fantastic. To be inventive and fun without being gimmicky is a fine line, but one the Shrub and Shutter have nailed. Every day they also have happy hour between 5 & 7pm, meaning you can sip on something really special for only £7. A bargain by London standards and for the quality you’re getting, you are seriously in for a treat.

Currently NiHT are running a pop up from their kitchen, specialising in BBQ’s small plates and steaks we knew we where in for a treat, and we weren’t disappointed with the fabulous range of dishes. They look after vegans and vegetarians really well- the chef’s special when we went down was a BBQ’d aubergine and cauliflower nugget dish which was an incredible way to start the meal. We paired them with some buffalo chicken wings, which are always a winner in our books.

For the mains we got the second special of the day which was a flat iron steak. NiHT don’t lie when they say steaks are what they do well! Delicious and, needless to say, perfectly cooked. It came with a generous helping of truffle fries and mac and cheese, a delicious feast. We have to give the glazed pork ribs a big shout out as one of our favourite dishes. We ended up with sauce all over our face and hands, exactly how it should be.

The food and drink really were great, but the bones of the Shrub and Shutter are something to be celebrated too. The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly and made our night even more special.
