Is there anything better than a pint and a burger in a beer garden? We don’t think so. Read on to hear about you can WIN free burgers for 4!
Taking over the beer gardens of the Young’s pubs up and down the country, Burger Shack is Young’s Pubs very own burger kitchen. They’ve come out of the gates this summer with a brand new menu. That paired with the fact that we’ve beenhearing whispers that these will be some of the best burgers we’ll ever have meant that we just had to see if these really are as ‘chin-dribblin’ as we were promised.
We headed down to The Windmill, our local Young’s smack bang in the middle of Clapham Common. Where could be a better setting to enjoy a burger and pint than in the beer garden of The Windmill whilst looking over the green, green pastures of Clapham Common? Burger Shack’s brand new menu is all American; think British beef and ingredients dressed up like they were partying in the USA; there’s the hot chick, chicken wings, doughnuts… We couldn’t wait to get our mouth around a bun.
We tried a big variety of their new flavours; and let us tell you, the burgers aren’t messing around. There’s a serious selection: vegan, beef, chicken and lamb burgers on offer – really something for everyone. We got The Classic- a double beef patty with melted cheese and a gorgeous burger sauce, The Hot Beef was spiked with a tingly Louisiana hot sauce and pickled chillis which made it really moorish and The Loaded Plant wasn’t the typical half-assed offering for vegans. There was clearly lots of thought behind it; watercress, a soya yogurt, maple roasted squash and we loved the citrusy pesto sauce they dressed it in. The Hot Chick was a real standout. Crunchy buttermilk fried chicken with blue cheese and a buffalo hot sauce is always going to be a winning combo for us. So, so good- especially when washed down with a refreshing pink grapefruit juice and an equally refreshing pint of Gipsy hill, a local South London lager.
To go with our burger feast we got an array of the sides too; curly fries pimped with ox cheek and plum ketchup were a great take on dirty fries, the chicken wings were a lovely dish for the table and the blue cheese sauce meant that they were gone in no time, likewise with the patron peppers. We loved how buttery the grilled corn was and the frickles are a must order for fun-value (plus they are really, really flavourful, perfect with a beer). But it was the spud nuggets that really shone for us. You can get these little bitesized spuds with cheddar and ketchup (delicious) or get the upgraded ‘shack’lette’, the crispy golden potato get cosied up with spoonfuls of gooey camambert, red onion and pickles. Ideal for sharing… or for indulging solo. No judgement.
