Things are getting freaky in Balham…

… And that’s because Freak Scene is just a few days away from opening its doors. š¯–²ushi and robata comin’ in hot.

Mark your calendars, sushi lovers, because Freak Scene is opening on the 18th January and it’s kind of a big deal. Freak Scene isn’t a brand new concept; it’s been running since 2017 in a few different iterations; initially as a pop-up in Farringdon, then as a brick and mortar site in Soho in 2018. Since then it’s expanded to Parsons Green where it opened in March 2023 and now it’s opening a 3rd site on Ramsden Road in Balham.

And when you look at who owns the business, its impressive expansion over the capital isn’t all that surprising. Australian chef Scott Hallsworth (and Balham local!) is at the helm of Freak Scene and he’s quite the force. Who once was the head chef of Nobu and founder of Kurobuta is now the owner of this blossoming restaurant chain. Also unsurprisingly, is the kind of food that Freak Scene are turning out. Hallsworth is an expert in pan-Asian cuisine and has a passion for fun, innovative fusion dishes. Which is exactly the kind of food you can expect to see in the Balham restaurant.

There’ll be the sushi classics; sashimi, nigiri, rolls, as well as other fusion staples like the ever-popular BBQ pork belly buns and grilled hispi cabbage.Ā But what makes Freak Scene special are the Hallsworth signatures. The sashimi ‘pizza’, black cod tacos, Singapore chilli crab wontons are just a few of the exciting menu items that really sets this spot apart. The innovation doesn’t stop at the food. They’ve installed the ‘Kirin frozen beer machine’ which means you order a whipped, frozen top to your beer. Why not?

Freak Scene will be opening on 18th January at 1 Ramsden Road. Bookings open now.
