There’s loads going on in Brixton for the Windrush 75 celebrations. Many of them are free and all of them will be worth checking out.
Hear stories about the deep shelters in Clapham South
When: 16th June, 5pm -7pm
Where: Lambeth Town Hall, SW2 1RW
Hear history researcher Kwaku talk about the deep shelter in Clapham South and it’s links with the Windrush generation at this presentation in Lambeth Town Hall. In 1948 many of those who had just arrived in the UK were temporarily housed in the deep shelter before they found more permanent residences. It’ll be a fun, relaxed set up so bring the family!
Join the Lambeth Procession

The Brixton Project are hosting a community procession that will parade from Brockwell Park to Windrush Square. We wrote about it here, but you’ll spot 5 themes of Ancestry, Island Life, Building Britain, Carnival and Future.
Learn about the children of Windrush at this exhibition

‘Over A Barrel: Windrush Children Tragedy and Triumph’ is an interactive exhibition all about the children of the Windrush era. Learn about their stories of ” separation and reunion, isolation and belonging, as well as the cultural and social adjustments these children had to make in order to thrive in a hostile environment”. The exhibition will also be free to attend on Windrush Day.
Deep dive into the history of Windrush
When: 27th June, 6.30pm

Join Onyekachi Wambu, Nigerian-British journalist and writer, as he talks about his experience editing the very first published literary on Windrush and the 500 years of history preceding the event. He will speak about slavery, empire and colonisation.
‘Represent’ Pop up runway
When: 11th June
Where: Pop Brixton, SW9 8PQ
Pop Brixton are joining in with the Windrush 75 celebrations with their pop up fashion event. From 11am-4pm check out the design market that champions up and coming designers, and then from 5pm-6pm watch the fashion come to life at the runway show.
See the public’s memories of arrival
When: 22nd June, 8pm
Where: Piccadilly, W1D 7ET
So this one isn’t actually in Brixton, but it is organised by the Brixton based Black Cultural Archives in collaboration with CIRCA and it’s also so cool we couldn’t leave it off. They are accepting submissions from the public of memories and pictures that depict their experience of arrival. The submissions will be projected on Piccadilly Lights at 8pm on Windrush Day for the whole of London to see.

Poetic Unity and Tiny Brixton are teaming up for a night of ‘community connection, talented performances and cultural celebration’. Poetic Unity is an organisation that uses poetry to support young people across the UK by giving them a voice.
