50% of the competition in the London & South East heat was repped by Brixton chefs, just going to show the quality of food we have here.
Series 18 of the Great British Menu is upon us and this years theme is all about celebrating the very best of British animation and illustration, which means there have been some inspired, fun and colourful creations so far. The series is split into heats determined by regions of the UK, and this year Brixton was represented by 2 out of the 4 chefs in the ‘London & South East’ competition. Here are our chefs:
Brian Danclair
Brian owns and runs two Brixton restaurants. Fish, Wings & Tings opened in 2012 and serves traditional Caribbean food. It’s no wonder this spot is so popular in Brixton. The service is as warming as the curry mutton. Bouncing off the success of his first restaurant, Brian opened Danclair’s Kitchen, also in Brixton Village. This is a slightly more refined tapas style menu that features those signature Caribbean flavours that the chef has mastered.
Robbie Lorraine
Robbie owns pop-up concept Only Food and Courses, which opened in Pop Brixton in 2020. The menu doesn’t take itself too seriously, and serves nostalgic plates of food with cheffy flair. For example the scampi and chips is actually ‘poached langoustine tails coated with amaranth & pork skin crumb served with chickpea chips’. It’s fun and has creative, delicious food on a carefully curated tasting menu. Though the restaurant moved to a permanent location in The Strand in December 2022, its roots were planted in Brixton and we couldn’t be prouder of that!
SPOILER ALERT! Sadly Brian Danclair was voted out by the judges on the first round (starters and fish course) but Robbie Lorraine has made it through to the next round. Good luck Robbie, we are rooting for you!
