In a bold stride that’s stirring buzz across London’s pub scene, Portobello Pub Company has officially taken the helm at Darwin & Wallace.
This acquisition adds seven bustling locations, including the beloved No 32 in Clapham Old Town, to Portobello’s portfolio.
Founded by Mel Marriott in 2012, Darwin & Wallace has been a beacon of modern pub culture, blending sophisticated dining with the casual charm of a local pub. While Darwin & Wallace will retain its name, the brand is set to grow under its new ownership.
This expansion brings Portobello’s collection to 27 venues, with plans for further growth. The focus will remain on enhancing the unique character of each location.
Upon the deal’s close, Marriott stepped down from daily operations, passing the leadership baton to Richard Stringer of Portobello Pub Company. Yet, the original Darwin & Wallace team is staying on board to ensure a seamless transition.
Mark Crowther, chairman of Portobello, expressed his excitement about the integration: “Securing Darwin & Wallace is a win for us. It brings a top-tier business into our fold and enhances our high-quality estate. We’re excited to elevate these venues to new heights.”
Marriott shared her thoughts on the transition: “It’s bittersweet to step back, but I’m proud of what we’ve built. I’m eager to see how the business thrives with Portobello’s guidance.”
With this move, Portobello not only promises to uphold the legacy of Darwin & Wallace but also to enrich the Clapham scene, starting with No 32. It’s a fresh chapter for the venues, promising continuity and innovation in equal measure.
