Come April 1, this beloved outdoor swimming haven will reopen its gates after a £3.8 million revamp, promising to be better than ever.
A Fresh Look for a Historic Gem
Tooting Bec Lido, a staple of British summertime and the largest open-air freshwater pool in the UK, has undergone extensive upgrades. The project’s aim was to secure the pool’s future for generations to come. Among the improvements, a new pumphouse and electrical sub-station have been installed. These are crucial for powering the lido’s state-of-the-art UV filtration and water purification system. Additionally, visitors will notice new pipework, a fresh pool lining, and enhanced landscaping around the water’s edge.
Dating back to 1906, the lido holds a special place in the history of British open-air pools, celebrated as Wandsworth’s “jewel in the crown.” Managed by Places Leisure on behalf of the council, the facility is a cherished part of the community.
Dive Into the New Season
Starting April 1, swimmers eager to test the waters can pre-book their visit. Although free membership with Places Leisure is required for booking, it ensures your spot on busy days. The lido, capable of welcoming up to 1,300 visitors, still allows walk-ins, though entry isn’t guaranteed during peak times.
Wandsworth’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Judi Gasser, expressed enthusiasm for the lido’s reopening. “We’re thrilled to welcome the public back after this significant refurbishment,” she stated. “The enhancements ensure the lido remains a beloved fixture for the next 50 years, safeguarding its legacy.”
What’s Next?
The lido’s transformation isn’t stopping here. Plans for further enhancements include a new entrance with improved security, a versatile café accessible from both the common and the pool, additional toilets and showers, and a club room for use during the winter months.
