Here’s some good news for those living in Wandsworth! In a world of prices constantly getting pricier, a little bit of relief on our wallets is always going to be welcome news. And this year, residents of Wandsworth are getting something extra to be smug about…
Though Westminster used to be the cheapest London borough to live in (in terms of council tax), this year Wandsworth is taking the crown. Though the majority of boroughs will be increasing the costs of their taxes, Wandsworth is doing their own thing. They are freezing the majority of their taxes meaning that, from April, households will be paying £961 per year- the cheapest council tax rate in the whole of the UK. We say ‘majority’ because Wandsworth will be increasing how much they are spending on social care.
Westminster is still pretty cheap, however. Londoners living there will be paying just £12 more per year- £973. And the most expensive place to live? Kingston. From April residents of the borough will have to pay a whopping £2374 per year (an increase of £127). It’s not just Kingston breaking the £2k mark: Bexley, Croydon, Harrow, Havering, Richmond, Sutton and Waltham Forest will all be charging upwards of £2k and it looks like Camden, Brent, Lewisham and Haringey will likely be joining them if they decided to increase tax by 4.99% (the maximum amount). And, with 95% of councils saying that the almost 5% increase is in their plan, it’s likely that those 12 boroughs are going to get expensive…
